What Is the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam?

The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam is an introductory examination that evaluates a candidate's understanding of the fundamental concepts of the securities industry. It serves as the first step toward many securities registrations and provides a foundation in financial markets, investment products, industry regulations, and ethical business practices.
The SIE Exam is available to individuals 18 years of age or older, and sponsorship by a FINRA member firm is not required. Successfully passing the SIE demonstrates foundational industry knowledge; however, additional qualification examinations and association with a FINRA member firm are generally required to become registered to engage in securities business.

Who Should Take the SIE Exam?

The SIE Exam is ideal for individuals who are:
  • Exploring a career in financial services
  • College students interested in the securities industry
  • Career changers pursuing new professional opportunities
  • Individuals preparing to join a broker-dealer or financial services firm
  • Future candidates planning to complete additional securities licensing examinations
Whether you're just beginning your journey or preparing for your next professional milestone, the SIE provides an excellent foundation for a career in the financial services industry.

What makes the SIE Important to your career?

The SIE Exam represents the first step toward many careers in financial services. It demonstrates your understanding of essential industry concepts and prepares you for more advanced qualification examinations required for specific securities registrations.
